Friday Night I made my way over to Westerly to check out the Above Elite Studios Open Studio & Art Sale. My friend Dora Szekely has been working there whilst hanging in Rhode Island (she’s heading to places unknown at some point!) and had a booth set up for her jewelry. I am a big fan of her silverwork and if I can’t find my necklace (still have to check my car) then I’m commissioning her to create the unique replacement. Dora is working hard to make ethically mined and ecologically friendly silver silver A THING. In lieu of directly sourced silver, she uses recycled silver for now… but expect big things from Dora in the future as she’s a go getter and quite a force to be reckoned with!
The two main artists who work at Above Elite Studios are photographer Maria Scaglione and painter and mixed media artist Laura Gaffke. I’ve met Maria several times before, but I was first introduced to her work at Hygienic Art in New London recently. The studio was filled with people engaging with the work and the artists involved, including myself. I had a lovely (but unfortunately on my part, quick!) chat with Laura who’s been in this space the longest.
I had to make another gallery stop up in Pawtucket, so I couldn’t stay long, but I’m glad that I made it over. Gave me a chance to see some new art, chat with the artists, and also drive a section of 95 that I haven’t seen in ages!
